All About ME
Me Recipe
(Medium: Colored Pencil and MicronPen)

We were given an unlimited concept to make a silhouette of ourselves and fill it with things about us. I choose various things from my childhood, life goals, likes, and hobbies. I like Toni Braxton's music, using Photoshop, singing, and various other things. Captioned around the paper is,"O[A]BSTAIN FROM THE MAINSTREAM," which has been a way of life for me. I just wanted this piece to reflect my authenticity or uniqueness as myself.

Complimentary Color Animal
Cabra
(Medium: Colored Pencil)

In this challenge, we were asked to build an entire animal using shades of only 2 colors. I choose Blue & Orange for mine not only because they're my favorite combination, but they also follow color theory. The goat was chosen to showcase it. As you get toward the warmth of the sun, the goat is golden, but the farther it is, the cooler it may get. I used all colored pencils to create the different tones. A sun serves as the backdrop to tie together this hot-cold concept. Overall, I liked how it turned out and the only improvement would be a signature saying,"Cabra."

Warm/Cool Colors Project
Sands of Time
(Medium: Colored Pencil)

We were told to chose a landscape where we could bring out both warm & cool colors. This piece is mostly composed of various blues and oranges that represent the color temperature from the reference photo. My biggest challenge was maintaining consistency of the pencil strokes to produce strong, solid colors. As a whole, the piece came out very nice and colorful.

Mexican Heritage Art Contest
Direction of the Dead
(Medium: Colored Pencil and Acrylic Paint)

Our project was to create a piece of work that reflected Hispanic Heritage and culture. My idea was to take from the annual tradition known as Day of the Dead and make a compass inspired by the skulls used on that day. 4 multi-colored skulls are placed in a compass lined with markers. I utilized color theory with the light closest to the yellow skull. I will admit that the background was a bit rushed, but that was due to time constraints and personal issues. Next time, I will go all the way and budget my time more efficiently.

Family Portrait/Culture Art
Jim ‘N Nick’s Throw-down
(Medium: Acrylic, Oil Pastel, and Colored pencil)

This piece gave me a challenge, but I appreciate how good it turned out. In conceptualization, I made it mandatory that I branch out into using acrylic paint; acrylics have never been my strong suite and I’m trying to improve myself. The building itself was done in both Prismacolor and Crayola colored pencil. The sky, clouds, roof, and flag was done in oil pastel while the parking lot and tree background were done in acrylic. What I planed was to recreate my family’s annual tradition of going to Jim ‘N Nick’s on the 4th of July. From left to right is my mother, me, my brother, and my father standing in the parking lot. We always enjoy ourselves before a table of delicious food in addition to fellowship. Most every 4th of July is one to remember.

 Leaves Project
Leaves in the Wind
(Medium: Watercolor)

For this project, we were given fall/winter-aged leaves to replicate on paper. In execution, I used various shades of red, orange, and mostly brown to create the warmth and texture of these natural occurrences. My style has always been hyper realistic, so I made sure to layer my colors and draw the creases & numerous bumps found when close to a leaf. When doing the background, I had the idea of having them floating in air; I colored it a light shade of blue to capture the sky’s beauty. I wish I could’ve blended it better, but I did my best with the skills I had. Overall, this piece helped me gain experience in the medium of watercolor and I think it’s one of my best

Nursing Home Card
Home is Heart
(Medium: Colored pencils & Prismacolor pencils)

When I found out we were creating cards from the senior citizens, I was ecstatic to have such an opportunity. I always wanted my art to affect people or maybe lighten up/amaze people and Christmas cards(the prompt) were right up my alley. I had the intent to create a Christmas Tree featuring a bulb and lights which could carry a message fit for the holiday. I used my strongest medium-colored pencils to create this scene. The bulb was done first and given the most detail while the tree and lights itself took minimal effort. The final thing I added was the message which became,”Home is Heart”. I also made sure to finish off my words with a candy cane-like finish. As a whole, I like how this piece turned out and hope an old person will find joy in it.

Future Collage
Hollywood Director
(Medium: Cardboard, Construction Paper, Prints, Velvet, Oil Pastel, Tin Foil, and Magazine Scraps)

This post is about visualizing a future goal. Making collages has always been fun and I like a challenge of finding materials to achieve the vision I sketched out. The scene I created is of a reality where I'm a film director striking it out in Hollywood. Los Angeles sits on the left hand sign lit up and a highway wall separates it. On the right is the majestic beauty of palm trees and distant mountains. At the forefront are lights, a camera monitor, and a crew person at the mercy of the director's chair. I worked about 3 weeks on it including conceptualization and pasting down materials and think it turned out great.

Comments

  1. I love how every detail feeds into the scenery such as the clouds in the background. I especially love the overlay of lights within the art piece.

  2. I really love how you built the sky using different printed paper, I would see you do more collages. The only I would say to work on is perspective of certain objects like screen and the chair.

  3. I Love the idea of how you start out in a set (foreground) and then you expand to a movie lot and expand even further into the background and create the Hollywood sign and show that you're in the booming business of film

  4. I like the fact you put "Light! Camera! Action!" that someone on the other side may have said. It enhances the piece.

  5. I think your use of materials and mediums in your collage is brilliant. The variety of components you used is definitely a good part of the piece. Also, the way you positioned your objects really accentuate the "collage" art style. One suggestion would be to use darker paper in some areas to represent shading, but overall this is a very creative work.
